Ribbon-Cutting and Blessing of the new Murray House in Clifton 

On November 14th, 2025, we celebrated the ribbon-cutting and blessing of the new Murray House group home. Murray House residents and staff were joined by Dennis and Patrick Murray, Catholic Charities CEO Scott Milliken and leadership, special guests, volunteers, and supporters. Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney led the blessing ceremony. Joanna Miller, Executive Director for Department for Persons with Disabilities, welcomed the residents into their new home in their beloved Clifton community. After a long search, we are grateful to have found this new home and extend our sincere thanks to all who contributed to our capital campaign, making this milestone possible for our residents. The spirit of DPD continues to flourish and grow.

Murray House is a proud pioneer and a symbol of dignity in care for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, having become the first of its kind in New Jersey when it opened its doors in 1971.

Murray House was founded by Fr. Jack Wehrlen and opened its doors in Paterson, NJ to two residents in 1971. Murray House is named after Jimmie Murray, a child with developmental disabilities from Paterson who passed away in 1969. Four generations of Murray Family members have stayed involved with DPD to honor Jimmie’s legacy in various capacities. Jimmie’s memory is forever honored through the individuals who live at Murray House and through the good work of the Murray Family.

The Murray House moved to Allwood Place in Clifton in 1992 and celebrated 40 years of service in 2011. Each year, the Murray House Dinner Dance is held in honor of Murray House, with funds benefitting the Department for Persons with Disabilities. 

As the people we serve age, so too does our ability to serve when combating environmental issues like stairs, accessible doorways, entrances and bathrooms.  We have been trying to re-locate Murray house for a few years now because it is a four-story home and what is needed is a ranch style home where the people we serve can age in place.
